Back to the Future : Pre-Prohibition brews

Some brewers have jumped in the Way back Machine to dig up old recipes from the way day. Session Lager from Full Steam calls itself "a classic all-malt pre-Prohibition style lager." Nebraska's Lucky Bucket Brewing Company says its pre-Prohibition style "salutes a time when lagers had greater character and more distinct flavor, when beer wasn't full of the additives found in many of today's mainstream lagers." Brooklyn Lager describes itself as "a revival of Brooklyn's pre-Prohibition all-malt beers."

All of these are fine beers. Pure, smooth, malty, refreshing and satisfying, they're Batch 19 from Coors is a Pre-Pro style lager exactly what you might imagine filled those kegs that were smashed with the ax back in 1920.

Only none of them is what our great-grandfathers were actually drinking before the Prohibition. By the time the 18th Amendment rolled around, America was already hooked on corn and rice.

Scroll through the "American Handy-Book of the Brewing, Malting and Auxiliary Trades" by R. Wahl & M. Henius (go ahead, it's on Google Books), and you'll find that by the early 20th century, U.S. brewers had adopted and praised corn and rice as suitable adjuncts to traditional barley malt.

Introducing UFO Pumpkin

This unfiltered pumpkin beer is perfect for this time of year - when autumn is just around the corner and we are wistfully waiting for the leaves to start turning colors and for the air to get a little crisper. This beer has worked its way effortlessly into our "favorite fall beers" list, and when you try it, you will know why!

ABOUT THIS BEER
UFO Pumpkin is a barley based beer. Pumpkin puree is added at the beginning stages of the brewing process. Along with pumpkin, we also add a hint of spice in order to give the beer a balanced flavor and a finish you won't forget. Motorized Beer Cooler Lands Driver In Court

An Australian man was fined and had his license suspended after being caught driving a scooter made of a motorized beer cooler capable of carrying several dozen drinks.

The scooter featured a cooler box mounted on a wheeled frame, a steering handlebar and was powered by a 50 cc engine. The cooler doubled as a driver's seat and could hold up to 48 bottles of beer, Reuters reported.

Chris Petrie, 23, bought the scooter on the Internet for $600. After assembling it with a friend, he had a few beers and decided to drive it home.

Petrie was arrested en route and found to be more than three times over Australia's legal blood alcohol limit. He was charged with drink driving and driving without a license
